Why Australians can't get over how Americans eat their sandwiches: 'Help us understand'
Australians have been left stunned after discovering a shocking fact about the way Americans prepare sandwiches.
Ryan Jon, a popular podcast host from Melbourne, was left scratching his head alongside co-host, Toni Lodge after discovering Americans don’t typically butter their sandwich bread.
‘I just found out Americans don’t put butter on their sandwiches,’ he said, after receiving a message from a listener.
‘I know America has a lot of problems but surely this is right up there. Butter in a sandwich is normal!’
Americans then said that while they often use other condiments like mayonnaise, ketchup, or mustard – butter has never crossed their minds as an important ingredient for sandwiches.
The duo was left confused about the ‘weird’ food choice.
‘You need a wet thing. A sandwich needs a wet thing,’ Toni said. ‘You can’t have a dry sambo.’
‘The butter also keeps the sandwich together. Have you ever had dry bread, then a bit of cheese and a bit of ham, then it just falls out? You need that butter!
‘Are they just putting mayonnaise in it?’ Toni asked.
Ryan pleaded for his American listeners to explain their culinary choices.
Unfortunately for Ryan – many confirmed that they do not typically use butter.
‘We already have enough health problems in America. Putting butter on sandwiches would easily be a tipping point for some,’ an American joked.
Another revealed: ‘Mayo, mustard, aioli … we use other sauces! We aren’t complete monsters!’
‘American supermarkets have an entire aisle for condiments we put on sandwiches. Does the rest of the world not? Do y’all only use butter?’ one asked.

As expected, Australians were baffled by the revelation.
‘Are you kidding? I just had a full mental breakdown over the idea of a sandwich without butter. What the heck is butter for then?’ a woman wailed.
One offered: ‘Butter is a barrier for the ingredients. If you’re storing for lunch later, it keeps the bread from going soggy.’
But some revealed that they used butter for other reasons.
‘Different condiments are usually used for a sandwich. I only use butter in a grilled cheese sandwich,’ one shared.
