Jack Riley, character actor in TV and film comedies, dies at 80

Jack Riley, a character actor who portrayed the grumpy, self-absorbed Mr. Carlin on "The Bob Newhart Show" and also voiced a character on Nickelodeon's animated "Rugrats," died Aug. 19 in Los Angeles. He was 80.

His representative Paul Doherty confirmed the death but did not provide a cause.

Mr. Riley provided the voice for absent-minded dad Stu Pickles on “Rugrats” and its spinoff, “All Grown Up!” He appeared in several Mel Brooks movie comedies, playing an executive in “Silent Movie” (1976), a desk clerk in “High Anxiety” (1977), a soldier in “History of the World: Part I” (1981) and a TV newsman in “Spaceballs” (1987).
